The imperial capital

Why come here

Beijing is where most first journeys to China begin, and for good reason: no other city holds six centuries of imperial architecture in one walkable core. The Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven and the Summer Palace sit inside a ring road that also contains the old hutong lanes, where people still live the way the city lived before it grew to 22 million.

It is also the easiest place in China to see the Great Wall properly. Most visitors are driven to Badaling, the crowded coach-tour section. We take you to Mutianyu instead — the same engineering, a fraction of the people, with a cable car up and a toboggan down if you want it.

Allow four to five days. Beijing rewards slow days: a morning inside the palace, an afternoon in a teahouse, an evening eating Peking duck in a restaurant that has served it for a century.

What to see

The sights worth your time

Tap any one open for the practical detail — how long to allow, and how we work it into your day.

The Forbidden City
980 buildings and 8,700 rooms, walked in half a day with a guide who knows which courtyards empty out first. Your ticket is reserved in advance — day-of sales routinely sell out in peak season.
Our tip: Enter at the Meridian Gate and exit at the north gate to Shenshan Park, where emperors once surveyed their city.
Mutianyu Great Wall
The quietest of the restored sections, about 90 minutes from the city. Twenty-two watchtowers along a forested ridge, and a cable car that spares you the climb.
Our tip: We leave Beijing by 07:30 so you reach the wall as the gates open. Most tour groups arrive after 10:00.
Temple of Heaven
Where the emperors prayed for a good harvest. The triple-tiered Hall of Prayer is the most photographed building in China, and the surrounding park is full of locals doing tai chi, playing cards and singing opera.
Our tip: Go early. The park opens at 06:00 and belongs to the neighbourhood until about 09:00.
Summer Palace
A 290-hectare lakeside garden built as an imperial escape. A boat across Kunming Lake is the civilised way in.
Our tip: Roughly 2 hours of walking. We can cut it to the Long Corridor and the Marble Boat if you prefer a short day.
Hutong lanes and courtyard houses
The old city behind the Drum Tower: narrow alleys, courtyard homes, bicycle repairmen and dumpling shops. Best seen by rickshaw or on foot with someone who speaks the language.
Our tip: Nanluoguxiang is the famous one, which is exactly why we take you to the quieter lanes north of it.
Niujie Mosque and the Muslim district
Xi'an gets the credit, but Beijing's Muslim quarter has been here since 996 AD. The Niujie Mosque is a working place of worship with Chinese roof architecture over Islamic prayer halls.
Our tip: The surrounding streets are the best place in Beijing for halal beef, mutton and pastries.
Halal & Muslim-friendly dining

Eating well in Beijing

Beijing has a genuinely old Muslim community, so halal food is not hard to find — it is simply unevenly distributed. The Niujie district south-west of the centre is the heart of it: qingzhen (halal) restaurants, butchers and bakeries on almost every block, plus the Niujie Mosque itself. Most 3- to 5-star hotels can arrange a halal or Muslim-friendly breakfast if we ask in advance, and we confirm every restaurant on your route before you travel.

How our pricing works. We do not publish fixed prices, because a fixed price would either overcharge a couple or underdeliver for a group of nine. Every itinerary is quoted individually against your dates, hotel standard and group size, with everything itemised in writing. Send us your travel window and we will come back within 24 hours with a full quotation and no obligation.
Questions

Beijing — frequently asked

How many days do we need in Beijing?
Four days covers the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, the Temple of Heaven and the Summer Palace without rushing. Three days is possible if you drop the Summer Palace. Five days lets you add a day trip to Chengde or a full day in the hutongs.
Can we see the Great Wall without the crowds?
Yes. Mutianyu first thing in the morning, or Jinshanling or Simatai for a hiking section with almost nobody on it. We never send guests to Badaling unless they specifically ask.
Is Beijing manageable in winter?
Very. The city empties of tourists, the palace is quiet, and the Wall under light snow is one of the great sights of China. Bring a proper coat; daytime highs sit around 2°C.
How do we get from Beijing to Xi'an or Shanghai?
High-speed rail. Beijing to Xi'an is about 4.5 hours, Beijing to Shanghai about 4.5 hours. We book the seats, tell you which station and which entrance to use, and meet you on arrival.
