Why come here

Kunming sits at 1,900 metres in Yunnan, where the weather is mild all year, the flowers never stop, and the population is one of the most ethnically diverse in China — 25 recognised minority groups live within the province.

It is also the most underrated entry point to China. Direct flights from Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok, no crowds, and within reach: the Stone Forest, the terraced rice fields of Yuanyang, the old towns of Dali and Lijiang, and the road south to Xishuangbanna on the Laos border.

Yunnan is a slower, gentler China. Give it five days and you will wonder why nobody told you about it.

What to see

The sights worth your time

Tap any one open for the practical detail — how long to allow, and how we work it into your day.

Stone Forest (Shilin)
A UNESCO-listed karst landscape of limestone pillars, blades and caverns covering 350 sq km, formed 270 million years ago. Local Sani Yi people have their own legends about how it grew.
Our tip: 90 minutes from Kunming. About 3 hours of walking with some stairs; electric carts available.
Dali and Erhai Lake
An old town between mountains and a 250 sq km lake, with Bai minority architecture, tie-dyed textiles and cycling routes around the shore.
Our tip: Two hours from Kunming by high-speed rail. Best with an overnight stay.
Lijiang Old Town
A UNESCO World Heritage maze of cobbled lanes, canals and wooden Naxi houses below Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Busy, beautiful and best early or late.
Our tip: Three hours by rail from Dali. The quietest hours are before 09:00.
Yuanyang rice terraces
Terraces carved into the Ailao mountains by the Hani people over 1,300 years, holding water that mirrors the sky at sunrise. The most photographed landscape in Yunnan and still almost entirely domestic tourism.
Our tip: Five hours from Kunming by road. Best November to March when the terraces are flooded.
Green Lake Park and Kunming's bird market
The city's own park, full of locals dancing, singing and playing cards, with the old bird and flower market lanes nearby.
Our tip: A good half day at ground level, and free.
Wild mushroom season
June to September, Yunnan produces some of the most prized edible fungi in Asia. Restaurants serve them in hotpot, stir-fried, or as a simple soup, and the mushroom market on the edge of the city is a spectacle.
Our tip: We can arrange a halal mushroom hotpot evening — one of the best meals in China.
Halal & Muslim-friendly dining

Eating well in Kunming & Yunnan

Yunnan has a substantial Hui Muslim population, and Kunming has several historic mosques plus qingzhen restaurants throughout the city, including the area around Shuncheng Street. Yunnan cuisine is vegetable- and mushroom-heavy, so the halal versions are excellent and the local specialities — wild mushroom hotpot, rice noodles, steamed chicken — adapt well. In smaller towns on the Dali and Lijiang routes options thin out, and we plan packed meals where necessary. As always, we confirm every restaurant before you travel.

How our pricing works. We do not publish fixed prices, because a fixed price would either overcharge a couple or underdeliver for a group of nine. Send us your travel window and we will come back within 24 hours with a full quotation and no obligation.
Questions

Kunming & Yunnan — frequently asked

Why start in Kunming rather than Beijing?
Because it is closer, cheaper, less crowded and gentler. Direct flights from Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok, a mild climate, and no altitude or crowding issues. If you have already seen the big cities, or you want nature and minority culture rather than imperial monuments, Yunnan is the answer.
Do we need to acclimatise in Kunming?
No. Kunming is 1,900 m, which is comfortable for almost everyone. Only if you continue to Shangri-La or Tibet does altitude become a factor, and we build the route to rise gradually.
Can we combine Yunnan with Tibet?
Yes, and it is a natural pairing. Kunming to Shangri-La by road or rail, then a flight to Lhasa. The gradual altitude gain is actually the best way to approach Tibet.
