West Lake and the tea hills

Why come here

One hour from Shanghai by high-speed rail, and the prettiest city in eastern China. West Lake has been the subject of Chinese painting and poetry for a thousand years, which is why its causeways, pagodas and willow-lined shores look composed rather than accidental. They are.

Inland from the lake are the Longjing tea hills, where the best green tea in China is grown on terraces above Lingyin Temple — one of the largest Buddhist complexes in the country, with rock carvings in the cliffs around it.

Hangzhou needs two days, or one as a day trip from Shanghai. Most guests tell us afterwards that they wished they had stayed a night.

What to see

The sights worth your time

Tap any one open for the practical detail — how long to allow, and how we work it into your day.

West Lake
A 6 sq km lake ringed by causeways, pagodas and gardens, and the single most painted landscape in Chinese art. Walk the Su and Bai causeways, then take a boat to the Three Pools Mirroring the Moon.
Our tip: The lake is free and always open. Early morning mist makes it, so we start at 07:00.
Lingyin Temple & Feilai Feng
A working Buddhist monastery founded in 328 AD, with 340 rock carvings of Buddhas cut into the limestone cliffs outside it. The Hall of the Great Hero is 34 metres tall and holds a 24-metre camphor-wood Buddha.
Our tip: Allow three hours. The temple serves an excellent vegetarian lunch.
Longjing tea villages
Meijiawu and Longjing village, where Longjing (Dragon Well) tea is grown, picked and pan-fired by hand. You can watch the roasting and buy directly from the farm at a fraction of export prices.
Our tip: The spring harvest in late March to April is the only time the very best leaves exist.
Leifeng Pagoda
A five-storey pagoda on the lake's south shore, rebuilt in 2002 over the ruins of the original 975 AD structure. The view over the whole lake from the top floor is the one worth the ticket.
Our tip: Best at sunset, looking north across the water.
Xixi Wetland
A 11 sq km network of waterways, reed beds and persimmon trees west of the city, with boats rather than roads. Almost entirely domestic visitors, which for a Chinese beauty spot is rare.
Our tip: Half a day, and mostly flat. Good for a slow morning.
Halal & Muslim-friendly dining

Eating well in Hangzhou

Hangzhou has a smaller Muslim population than Xi'an, but halal restaurants exist in the city and we confirm them in advance. There is also a historic mosque near the lake, and the vegetarian kitchen at Lingyin Temple is a genuine highlight for anyone, Muslim or not — no meat, no alcohol, and delicious. For longer stays we pair Hangzhou restaurants with halal-prepared meals at your hotel.

How our pricing works. We do not publish fixed prices, because a fixed price would either overcharge a couple or underdeliver for a group of nine. Every itinerary is quoted individually against your dates, hotel standard and group size, with everything itemised in writing. Send us your travel window and we will come back within 24 hours with a full quotation and no obligation.
Questions

Hangzhou — frequently asked

Should we stay overnight in Hangzhou or visit as a day trip?
Stay overnight if you can. A day trip gives you the lake and a rushed temple visit; a night lets you see the lake at dawn, which is when it is genuinely extraordinary, and the tea villages are open properly.
What is the best way to get there from Shanghai?
High-speed rail from Shanghai Hongqiao, about one hour, arriving at Hangzhou East. It is easier and faster than flying or driving, and we book your seats.
Is the tea village worth visiting?
Yes, if you like tea. You see the whole process, meet the growers, and the price is a fraction of what the same tea costs abroad. If you do not care about tea, spend the time on the lake instead.
